Three Movies That Impacted Me
What are three movies that impacted me? Well, honestly, there’s a lot more than just three but I’ll try to narrow it down and talk about a few of them. My choices are Rio Bravo, Last of the Mohicans and The Holiday.
Rio Bravo. Yes, the one with John Wayne and Dean Martin. I love westerns and just about anything with John Wayne in it. This particular one I like is because of the duet with Dean Martin and Ricky Nelson. Martin sings My Rifle, My Pony, and Me. In the scene I’m referring to, he’s laying on a bed in the sheriff’s office with a cigarette in his mouth and his hat drawn over his face. He has such a “lazy” way of singing it that just adds to the charm. At one point, he casually motions Nelson to start singing and again, it’s something about the lazy and casual way he does it, both with his voice and his motions, that I find so fascinating. Here’s a link to that scene, if you’re interested. It’s the best part of the movie!!!
Last of the Mohicans. That’s when I fell in love with the Smokey Mountains and I ended up going there numerous times for hikes. It is a very old mountain range and the “blue” fog is created by all the vegetation releasing vapors. Who knew? It adds to the mystique of the mountains, doesn’t it? Oh, and the music is incredible. It works so well with the scenery, you can virtually transport yourself mentally there anytime you play the music. The other thing the movie does is highlight a moment in history. Yes, I know it’s a novel and it’s not true, but there are some truths within the story. I have always loved history and this movie highlights the French and Indian War in 1757. At that time, both England and France were fighting for control of North America and the land was in an upheaval. Settlers had begun occupying the land and the Native Americans were being pushed out. This book gives you a glimpse into what life was like back then. Oh, and did I mention it stars Daniel Day Lewis? Watch the movie, read the book!!
The Holiday. And since that time of the year is coming up again, I’ll watch it one more time, not that I need an actual holiday as an excuse to see it! This one stars Kate Winslet and Cameron Diaz as two two lonely women trading houses/lives for two weeks during the Christmas holiday. One’s in LA and one’s in England. Jude Law and Jack Black are the two suitors and it’s just one laugh after another. It is a romantic comedy, so if you’re not into that, this might not be your cup of tea. It’s on my must-see list and I do and I do. I enjoy it that much – yes, I really do. It’s great. Check it out if you’re looking for some light entertainment.
